GRMG students join the fisheries culture cum eco-tour to learn about fisheries resources and sustainable management

Some Geography and Resources Management (GRMG) students have recently joined a fisheries culture cum eco-tour organised by Tai Po Environmental Association and supported by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the HKSAR Government. The guided tour aims to enhance the local tertiary students’ understanding about local fisheries resources and sustainable management and meanwhile raise their awareness on marine conservation.

Students took a boat to Lai Chi Chong which is a Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and showcases various volcanic rocks and sedimentary rocks formed more than 100 million years ago. Students learnt about the ecological environment and how the coastal resources like the mangroves and fung shui woods are contributing to the unique environment that sustains the village history and people’s livelihoods.

Then, students went to the Yung Shu Au Fish Farm to see the fish farming activities and understand their differences with the traditional fishing industry. Fishermen explained the history of Hong Kong fisheries development, mode of operation of the fish farms, fish feeding methods and the concept of sustainable development. They also showed our students the small fishing boats, cages and fishing techniques. For students living in the urban city, this tour is a precious opportunity to learn more about the importance of our local fisheries resources and management.
