On 30 May 2025, the Division of Arts and Languages (DAL) hosted an intimate workshop designed specifically for 11 local secondary school students, focusing on the vital connections between storytelling and the DSE English Oral Examination. This engaging event attracted a diverse group of participants eager to refine their narrative strategies in alignment with examination expectations. The workshop aimed to cultivate both a storytelling skillset and mindset by integrating essential tips for critical thinking, thereby enhancing students' abilities to develop logical and coherent ideas. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of practical presentation and language skills, equipping students with the necessary know-how for effective delivery during their oral assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Yvonne Wong, along with Ms. Shannel Carnett, delivered a compelling session that integrated the craft of storytelling with the essential skills critical to acing the DSE English Oral Examination. During the session, they introduced participants to the significance of storytelling in DSE English oral discussions, outlining key components such as \u201cinitiation,\u201d \u201cresponse,\u201d and \u201csustainment.\u201d This framework encouraged students to familiarise themselves with the necessary skillset and mindset to orchestrate and stimulate a meaningful and authentic discussion that would impress not only their peers but, most importantly, the examiner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highlights of the session included, but were not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- consolidating important critical thinking skills for logical idea development<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- asking questions in various ways for different purposes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- manoeuvring the conversation by changing the discussion paths<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- demonstrating presentation and language skills for effective delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many acknowledging an expanded understanding of how the storytelling could enhance their performance in the DSE English Oral Examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAL takes pride in fostering an environment that nurtures effective communication and boosts speaking confidence, helping students prepare for their upcoming challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
