The Journal celebrates the College of International Education\u2019s writing talent. It is headed and produced by English lecturers at CIE.<\/p>\n<p>It is our honour to have one of our published poets, Conny Zheng Cui Ting from BLLS, to share with us the creative process behind her poem, <em>Hold Your Hand<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The poem<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px #555555 solid;width: 95%;font-family: 'Times New Roman';line-height: 0.8em !important;padding: 1em\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;font-family: 'Times New Roman'\"><strong><em>Hold Your Hand<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Conny Zheng Cui Ting<\/p>\n<hr style=\"line-height: 2.5em;width: 75% !important;text-align: left\" \/>\n<p>She pulled out the needle from her patient\u2019s backhand,<\/p>\n<p>threw it in the garbage can<\/p>\n<p>and listened to her ravings.<\/p>\n<p>Stood side and looked at that woman on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>A face full of wrinkles, like mountain ridges.<\/p>\n<p>When she clutched the calloused hand on the bed,<\/p>\n<p>she could feel the rushing time, fixed with bitter.<\/p>\n<p>This was the patient she had been taking care of for the longest time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The old hand gripped the young hand,<\/p>\n<p>like children, holding their favourite toys.<\/p>\n<p>She stayed bedside, stared at her and sighed<\/p>\n<p>How long has it been?<\/p>\n<p>Since they last held hands like this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two shadows.<\/p>\n<p>One sat, one lied.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing the steady breath, feeling the loosened grip.<\/p>\n<p>She slowly put her hand into the quilt.<\/p>\n<p>Whispered,<\/p>\n<p>Good night.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><u>The poet speaks<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The poem was written in the library actually. At that time, I just sent a message to my mom and comforted her that everything here was alright. Don\u2019t worry too much about me. Soon, she replied, \u201cI\u2019m long winded, am I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It reminds me of the current busy and rushed situation in every industry, not just about being a student. Most people would focus on personal demand but ignore the relationship with their family and friends. There was a piece of news about a father registering in a hospital in order to visit his son, who is a doctor. I got inspiration from this kind of events and depicted a picture about an ill mother and a nurse daughter. The daughter could finally have a good look at her mother. Although the medical profession serves others for life, not many take the time to stay with family.
