Mr Brian So Tsz-Long, alumnus of Geography and Resources Management Concentration Study, recently won the Space4Youth Competition 2020, a worldwide competition organised by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the Space Generation Advisory Council in Austria. The competition attracted 400 young people from 70 countries to join. Brian’s outstanding entry stood out from the crowd and was named as one of the three winners globally.
The Space4Youth Competition aims at elevating the voice of youth at the international level and show how young people can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 13, Climate Action through space. In Brian’s entry, he used the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) framework to examine whether the space technology can mitigate the climate challenge in HK community. Brian believed that space technology is a useful monitoring tool to provide accurate information like atmospheric situation and weather prediction to combat climate change in urban cities like Hong Kong.

Brian said: “It was a unique experience to participate in the Space4Youth Competition 2020. Space technology is merely a tool. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, it also requires international cooperation and high level of citizen awareness about the climate emergency and environmental conservation.” As a winner, Brian will be invited for a trip to the U.S. to meet with the representatives of the U.S. space sector and attend Adult Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
