As part of the NFUM year 2 curriculum, two visits were organized to the Fish Marketing Organization (FMO) in Aberdeen during March 2024. The purpose of these visits was to enhance the students' understanding of the marine fish wholesaling system and the direct supply of premium fish products in Hong Kong. The visit began with an informative video introduction to the FMO's history and operations. Students learned about the organization's five key responsibilities: leasing space to fishermen, arranging loading\/unloading areas, providing freezer storage, supplying clean seawater, and operating a gift shop. Notably, the FMO plays a crucial role in supporting local fishermen, offering loan funds to upgrade their facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students gained valuable insights into the FMO's operational model. The students were particularly impressed by the FMO's seawater supply system. The organization purchases filtered and disinfected seawater and distributes it to the three main fish markets, including Aberdeen. This service ensures that wholesalers have access to clean, high-quality seawater for their operations. Overall, the visits to the FMO provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of the marine fish wholesaling system in Hong Kong. The interactive approach, hands-on tour, and detailed explanations from the FMO staff helped the students gain valuable insights into the organization's role in supporting local fisheries and providing quality seafood products to the Hong Kong market. The students expressed a newfound appreciation for the complexities involved in ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of fresh marine fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
