HKBU SCE celebrates 50th anniversary with “Inspiring Generations” public exhibition showcasing half-century of contributions in nurturing talent
BackTo commemorate its 50th anniversary, the School of Continuing Education (SCE) of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is hosting the “Inspiring Generations” public exhibition from 21 to 27 October at K11 Art Mall in Tsim Sha Tsui. The exhibition features a range of interactive experiences designed to share SCE’s evolution and achievements in promoting quality higher education and nurturing talent in Hong Kong over the past five decades.
The exhibition opening ceremony was held today (22 October), officiated by Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, and Professor Ronald Chung, Dean of SCE, alongside the School’s four Advisory Committee Chairpersons – Professor Justin Chiu, Executive Director of CK Asset Holdings Limited (Chairperson of the College of International Education Advisory Committee), Mr Raymond Kwok, Director of Eagle Wide Limited (Chairperson of the Early Childhood and Elementary Education Advisory Committee), Professor Sylvia Fung, President of The Hong Kong Academy of Nursing & Midwifery (Chairperson of the Nursing Education Advisory Committee) and Dr Mile Cheng, Founder and Director of The Companions CCM Limited (Chairperson of the Continuing and Professional Education Advisory Committee). Together, they led the unveiling at the ceremony, marking the official start of the celebratory exhibition.
Dean Ronald Chung: from legacy of achievements to future-focused education
In his welcome remarks, Professor Ronald Chung, Dean of SCE, highlighted how the School has consistently evolved with Hong Kong’s social development. He noted SCE’s pioneering role in local higher education, from introducing overseas degree programmes in the 1980s and being the first to offer professional training for kindergarten teachers and Chinese medicine practitioners in the 1990s, to launching Hong Kong’s first Associate Degree programme in 2000. “SCE’s success today is built on the foresight of our predecessors, the trust of HKBU’s leadership, the support of our industry partners, as well as the dedication of our faculty, students and alumni,” said Professor Chung. “Looking ahead, the School will continue to leverage its flexibility and innovative vision to develop new programmes which address societal needs and equip the younger generation for the new and fast-growing industries of the future.”
President & Vice-Chancellor Alex Wai: powerful synergy driving educational excellence
Addressing the ceremony, Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, praised the synergistic relationship between SCE and the University proper. He cited how SCE’s early establishment of the Centre for Professional Development in Chinese Medicine laid the groundwork for HKBU's renowned Chinese medicine education. More recently, SCE’s Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) programme, whose curriculum incorporates Chinese medicinal nursing elements, further promotes the integration of Chinese and Western medicine and aligns with HKBU’s visionary goal in charting new frontiers of the University’s development. “With 50 years of profound experience in the self-financing higher education sector, an outstanding teaching team and close industry partnerships, SCE is uniquely positioned to create a powerful synergy with the University,” said Professor Wai. “Together, we will strengthen Hong Kong’s status as an international education hub and fulfil our shared mission to serve Hong Kong and our country.”
Launch of SCE 50th Anniversary Commemorative Publication: testament to 50 years of shared memories
The ceremony also marked the launch of the SCE 50th Anniversary Commemorative Publication. The publication documents key milestones in the School’s history and features in-depth interviews and personal stories from different stakeholders, offering a collective memory shared among the SCE community.
