This is an annual event organised by the HKSMS. This year, it is held on the top of Li Ka Shing Tower with 360 degree view on the campus and surrounding areas.
Two professional talks were scheduled: one on the determination of biomarker for diagnosis of lung cancer using various models of LC-MS-MS. The other is in clinical diagnostics using similar techniques in Pathology Laboratories from Hospital Authority.

Prof. Michael Siu had a discussion on determination of biomarkers.

The Life Science student had a direct conversation with Dr. Melody Wong from Queen Mary Hospital.

They enjoyed the workshop held in PolyU.

Participants' reflections:

Bilal:
It was a very valuable lecture given by the members of the HKSMS regarding Mass Spectrometry(MS) , especially for those individuals who want to work in the Science industry at hospitals or research labs. The talk provided useful concepts about the different techniques and daily applications of Mass Spectrometry, such as using Liquid Chromatography MS (LC-MS) to detect levels of toxicants which can help in detecting the toxicity of the substance. Overall, the lecture has gained my insights towards the medical industry and made me understand about them more clearly.

Tiaba:
The talks by both speakers Prof Micheal Siu and Dr Melody Wong was insightful. As a Health Science student whose major does not really focus on this topic, I realized I became more interested in the topic of mass spectrometer. It also was informative knowing the importance in clinical diagnostics and proteomics. I am grateful I got this opportunity to attend this workshop it broadened my perspective.

Naureen Seeda:
As a student member, the HKSMS Workshop 2026 felt very relevant to my studies. The speakers translated complex mass spectrometry topics into practical lessons tied to real clinical cases, making the techniques feel immediately useful rather than hypothetical. The discussion forum included real-life-based questions, and friendly networking with collaborators. Overall the workshop left me with concrete ideas to try in the lab in the future hopefully, and made me more interested in learning clinical proteomics.
