Public record is very important for studying Hong Kong in the past. In order to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of how the Hong Kong government preserves and manages records from both governmental and non-governmental organizations, 40 students from the Concentration Studies of History and Hong Kong Studies participated in a visit to the Public Records Office (PRO) of Hong Kong on 20 October 2016.
The staff from the Hong Kong Public Record Office first gave an introduction regarding the PRO’s functions, daily operations and services provided to the public. Students then visited the search rooms and were taught how to search the government records through the PRO’s online searching engine. They at last looked around the exhibition about Hong Kong public housing in the 1950s which are currently setting up in the PRO.
