In 2014, some high-profile student leaders raised awareness of youth political participation in Hong Kong. Instead of thinking youth political participation as a recent phenomenon, Dr. Edmund Cheng, Assistant Professor of Government and International Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University, argued that young people had already participated in politics since 1960s in the form of literary society(文社)and writing critics in newspapers.

There were around 30 students attended the talk. A vibrant and lively discussion with Dr. Cheng followed the talk.

Course Coordinator Dr. Franciscs Lai commented that the talk addressed some very important issues, such as the emergence of social media, and the transnational flow of knowledge about social movements. All these are shaping the role of young people in politics and social movements in the Hong Kong society.
