CIE and Ecobus have co-organised three environmental education training workshops recently. The scientific workshops aimed to provide training to over 120 secondary school students on topics including fresh water ecology, environmental conservation and urban planning. Participants were selected from the Student Environmental Ambassador Scheme commissioned by the Environmental Campaign Committee and supported by the Environmental Protection Department and Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government.

Over 30 Geography and Resources Management (GRMG) students from CIE joined the pre-training session and served as facilitators in the workshop. A field trip was conducted in Shing Mun River to investigate urbanisation, river channelisation and pollution issues, while the environmental laboratory sessions on water quality analysis and microorganism identification were held at the Bioeco Laboratory on HKBU Shek Mun Campus.

The secondary school students found the experience rewarding and useful for their study. Apart from learning more about the history and urbanisation of Shing Mun River, they also had the opportunity to acquire skills in water sampling and testing, for example, the analysis of water pH value, salinity, turbidity, nitrate and nitrite content, chlorine content and water hardness of the samples. The students also explored various forms of organisms under microscopes in the Bioeco Laboratory at CIE. These experiences aroused their interests in environmental conservation and urban planning in Hong Kong. At the same time, CIE GRMG students were able to enhance their knowledge and develop their leadership skills through helping out in the environmental education workshop.
