The “Speaking with Impact” English Public Speaking Training Workshop was held on 30 May, attracting 90 senior-form students and teachers from local secondary schools to College of International Education (CIE) for a lively and interactive training activity. The training aims to equip students with a proper mindset and essential skillsets when conveying a speech, which are especially useful for preparing themselves in public examinations.

Dr. Yvonne Wong, Lecturer of the Division of Arts and Languages, delivered a fascinating mass lecture by introducing the concept of “presence”, which serves as a key to success in public speaking. She first introduced the “3Cs” -- “connection”, “confidence” and “clear” that define how important “presence” is. To deliver an impactful speech, a speaker should be able to connect with their audience, and understand what they are expecting. Secondly, Dr. Wong reminded students to stay focused and engage the audience by telling a story or sharing a big idea. Moreover, it is also vital for students to dress neatly and pay attention to non-verbal communication such as facial expression and body posture.

Participants then formed into groups for real-time practices chaired by Dr. Wong and lecturers Ms. Bernice Teng and Ms. Fiona Wong. Students were invited to exchange ideas about the trend of ChatGPT with their peers, expressing themselves by utilizing the skills learnt during the training. CIE is delighted to receive positive feedback from students reflecting that they treasured the opportunity to speak publicly, and found most of the content covered in the workshop constructive. Good luck to all!
