CIE launches new on-line learning platform and virtual reality (VR) interactive learning system to create new experience in science education

With the objective to help students of Division of Applied Science to build a stronger foundation in science, the College of International Education (CIE) developed the Station of Interactive Learning & Virtual Education Resources (SILVER) online learning platform and a virtual reality (VR) interactive learning system under the "Quality Enhancement Support Scheme" (QESS) funded by the Education Bureau. With the use of interesting learning materials, students can always learn beyond classroom.

The Station of Interactive Learning & Virtual Education Resources (SILVER) online learning platform consists of diversified learning materials, including course videos, animations and interactive teaching materials, to bring to students a different learning experience. Students can access the online learning platform anytime and set their learning goals according to their abilities and progress. The VR interactive learning system includes a number of specially designed VR interactive games and simulations of experiments. Students may enter the interactive stimulations such as heart dissection and chemicals reactions with the VR devices provided by the College. Apart from learning scientific knowledge in the virtual lab stimulations, students will also learn the importance of laboratory safety.

Dr. Banny Chan, Lecturer and Project Leader said that with the College offering several science-related Concentration Studies, such as Environmental Conservation Studies and Life Science, the SILVER online learning platform will help students visualise the complex science concept, and allow them to observe and perform challenging experiments in the virtual lab stimulations, which certainly makes learning science more interesting. The new online learning system also promotes self-learning and encourages students to prepare before class, which will make it easier for them to understand the lectures.
