HKBU 65th Commencement

The Hong Kong Baptist University’s (HKBU) 65th Commencement was successfully held.  2,229 students from the School of Continuing Education (SCE) studied self-funded Associate Degree, Higher Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Diploma Programmes, including the first cohort of Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Programme and Higher Diploma in Data Science, were awarded graduation certificates. Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, Professor Martin Wong, Provost, Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning), Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer, Ms. Sally Ching, Academic Registrar, Professor Ronald Chung, Dean of SCE and Acting Director of College of International Education (CIE), and other directors presided at the ceremony, witnessed and congratulated the important moment of the graduates.

In Professor Chung, Dean of SCE and Acting Director of CIE, address, he used the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an example to illustrate how the dynamic world has brought vast changes to our life. He praised the resilience students demonstrated in adapting to changes and the perseverance shown in tackling challenges, and believed that these qualities could help them turn challenges into opportunities in the future.  Professor Chung also hoped they could stay kind and quoted a famous line from Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon, “Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice. Kindness endows us with sympathy and empathy, which enables us to connect with others, and gathers support and motivation to pursue our dream. This is the difference between us and AI.”

Associate Degree graduate Zhang Yiwen shared on stage that her past two years of study has gone through the stages of the epidemic easing and the resume to normalcy, she thanked the College for facilitating students move forward from the challenging distance learning, and bringing back the smiles on lecturers’ and schoolmates’ face.  Zhang was also thankful to the unsung heroes in the College in particular for their dedication to provide students a quality campus life, and expressed gratitude to every respected lecturer who has not only impart knowledge but patiently guided them to a broader world and a brighter future.
