The 2026 Hong Kong Cyclothon, organised by Sun Hung Kai Properties, took place last week with great enthusiasm. Among the participants were four SCE & CIE student athletes, Chan Pak Hoi and Yim Long Ho from the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sport and Recreation Leadership programme, and Chow Yu Chak and Kwan Ho Yin from the Higher Diploma in Management (Sport and Healthy Living) programme. They took part in the World University Trophy, a new non-competitive segment introduced at the Hong Kong Cyclothon this year.

Starting and finishing at the West Kowloon Cultural District, passionate riders pedaled through Hong Kong's iconic bridges, tunnels and urban landscapes including the Tsing Ma Bridge, the Ting Kau Bridge and the Stonecutters Bridge. The team faced off against thousands of elite university cyclists from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and overseas.

Chan Pak Hoi, the team captain shared his thoughts after the race, “I am delighted to be the team captain to lead our squad in this exciting event! This is truly an unforgettable and thrilling highlight in U-life as we can compete with student athletes from all over the world. The race was fast-paced and intense, from drafting to the final sprint, it was all about physical strength and resilience. The course was challenging, yet, I felt incredibly exhilarating to ride alongside my teammates and make the most of our daily trainings. We are committed to continuing our training and pushing our limits.”

For the four student riders, the event was an insightful demonstration of academic knowledge and real-world athletic performance. Applying classroom principles of exercise physiology, tactical drafting, energy management and biomechanics, students navigated high-speed peloton dynamics, overcoming strong headwinds and shifting weather. As they crossed the finish line, the team showcased not only a high level of teamwork and determination but also left themselves with an unforgettable experience of participating in a major sport event.
