With the aim of bolstering self-confidence in English public speaking among secondary school students and bringing out the competent speakers in them, the College of International Education (CIE) organized its first CIE English Public Speaking Contest. The Contest attracted about 250 participants from 38 secondary schools. At the Grand Final held on 11 July, Wendy Mcleod from HKMA David Li Kwok Po College demonstrated her remarkable eloquence and perfect composure and won the Championship.

The chosen theme, Silence, was based on Charles Caleb Colton’s famous quote, “Silence is foolish if we are wise, but wise if we are foolish.” The finalists performed diverse interpretations of this theme and all 10 contestants did a superb job.

The adjudicators of the Grand Final included Dr. Sam Lau, Director of CIE, and two academics who are seasoned experts in English public speaking training. They were Dr. Vicky Lee and Dr. Warren Linger. Dr. Lee was one of the pioneers in promoting the teaching of public speaking at CIE while Dr. Linger is an international awarded speaker with over 30 years of public speaking training experience.

Dr. Sam Lau, Director of CIE said, “All the contestants performed very well. Even at the Impromptu part, in which they were able to respond confidently. I hope students will continue to open up to more challenges and take the chance to scale new heights in learning English.”

“CIE recognizes the importance of English and public speaking in student development. Thus Public Speaking is designed as one of the signature General Education courses in the Associate Degree curriculum. With years of experience in conducting Public Speaking, we want to promote it to local secondary schools, offering an opportunity for students to display their creativity and communication skills.” Dr. Lau added.

When sharing some of the tips of English public speaking, Wendy Mcleod thankfully said that the training and support from teachers had helped her a lot. Practicing with teachers and friends had also strengthened her confidence in performing on stage.

Before the contest, lecturers from the English Team of CIE conducted a series of workshops and small-group practice sessions to equip the participants with the necessary skills on public speaking.
