CIE and Ecobus co-organised three environmental training workshops in January 2016. The workshops also included a field trip to Kai Tak River as well as a laboratory session held at the Bioeco Laboratory on HKBU Shek Mun Campus. A total of 25 Geography and Resources Management (GRMG) students joined the pre-training session and then served as facilitators in the three environmental workshops with over 120 secondary school students, who had previously joined the environmental ambassador training commissioned by the Environmental Campaign Committee and supported by the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR Government.

All participants found the experience interesting and useful to their study. For example, they learnt more about how urbanisation and river channelisation in Wong Tai Sin area caused pollution in Kai Tak River. The students also collected water samples from the upper and lower sections of Kai Tak River, and conducted a number of water quality tests. They analysed the pH value, salinity, turbidity, nitrate and nitrite content, chlorine content and water hardness of the samples and observed water organisms inside by using microscopes in the Bioeco Laboratory at CIE.

Apart from acquiring new knowledge on environmental conservation, CIE students also gained invaluable experience on environmental education, which will be beneficial to their career development in future.
