The HKBU Taekwondo team, comprising current students and alumni, gained a number of honours in the Taiwan Hung Kuang Cup Inter-collegiate Taekwondo Competition, winning the overall championship in the Female Open Group and becoming first runner-up in the General Group and the Male Open Group.

Siu Chung-yin (CIE Sport and Recreation Studies, Year 2) was champion in the Male Black Belt Open Group while Cheng She-wan (HKBU Geography, Year 4) was first runner-up in the Female Yellow Belt Group.

Chung-yin said that compared with Hong Kong, there is a stronger following for taekwondo in Taiwan and the scale of competition is larger. She-wan added that the female section of the competitions in Hong Kong focused mainly on black belt holders, so she needs to go to Taiwan to acquire more experience. “During the competition process, I gained a lot of valuable experience which made me understand that attitude is the key to success. Therefore, I remained relaxed and this made me perform better and better.”

Having achieved such excellent results, the team members sincerely thanked HKBU for its support and for the guidance and encouragement from the coach and all teammates. “The HKBU taekwondo team not only has a significant number of members but also has considerable strength. I can understand the different fighting styles and improve my performance through practicing with my teammates.” Chung-yin said.
