国际学院环境保育学专修同学参观鹤咀海岸保护区

As part of an ecology and environmental exploration series, two trips to visit The Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) at Cape d’Aguilar Marine Reserve were organized on 1 March and 12 April. About 40 students from Environmental Conservation Studies (ENCS) Concentration Studies participated in these trips to explore and learn about Hong Kong’s only marine reserve and the precious environment that it protects in our rapidly developing city.

Aside from admiring the natural beauty of the peninsular and geological formations of a sea arch and sea cave, students paid a visit to the marine lab to learn about some of the animals that can be found in Hong Kong as well as the broad range of academic marine sciences that can be done in the field of Ecology and Biology. This piqued the interests of many of our students, with a few expressing interest in pursuing further academic studies and careers related to this field.

ENCS Student Vriko, Yu Pik Fan found the trip fascinating. “The visit offered a chance for me to know more about research and conservation in the marine environment and especially the opportunities in Hong Kong for future study and career paths. I am looking forward to being able to apply the knowledge and skills gained at CIE, when working there this summer.” said Vriko.

“CIE has arranged several students to work at the marine lab this summer to facilitate their academic and career development so that they can fulfill their ambitions. We wish them all the best! Within the ENCS Concentration Studies we try to provide a diverse range of opportunities and to broaden the horizons of our students and build foundations for our students to succeed and progress to the next stage. For many of our students, these trips represented the first time, they have had the opportunity to go to these places, and they were highly appreciative that the chance was provided for them. ” said Dr. Stephen Cartwright, Lecturer of ENCS.

In addition to the marine laboratory and reserve, trips were organized to visit Mai Po to see the migratory birds that overwinter in Hong Kong at the RAMSAR site, and a visit to Starfish Bay and the marine lab at The Chinese University of Hong Kong during the academic year.
