Three students from CIE recently attended the Hong Kong Debate Open, the largest British Parliamentary debate tournament in Hong Kong. The tournament, which ran from 31 October through 2 November, attracted talented competitors from across the region. Over 120 teams from Japan, Korea, China, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Russia, and the UAE debated a wide range of issues. Among the topics debated were abortion, the public shaming of microaggressors, state provision of scholarships for low-income students, middle-eastern foreign policy, and environmental disasters in Southeast Asia.

This tournament marks the third competition for the CIE Debate Union, which was recently formed in the spring of 2015. Dr. Lucas Scripter, CIE Lecturer and Debate Trainer said: “The tournament was a valuable learning experience. Students must quickly brainstorm and develop arguments on a wide range of topics in a short period of time. It teaches students to think and speak on their feet.” SOO Chun Kwan Animus (Year 2, Psychology), founding member of the club said: “When we face every team, we learn from them while giving our best. I do think we’ve performed better than we expected, and we’re prepared for the journey ahead.”
